About And The History of Pearls

The Pearl is one of the oldest gems know to man and is the only gem that is created from a living creature (The Pearl Ouster). They were worn in Persia as early as 3500 BC and gained there highest popularity by the Romans. Julius Caesar was extremely fond of Pearls. Also To prove her love to Marc Antonius Cleopatra dispersed a pearl in wine and consumed it.
When diamonds were discovered in the 1700s in Brazil it made available diamonds that were affordable and the demand for pearls dropped dramatically. Then in the 1900s cultured pearls were made available. But this kind of pearl was slow to be accepted. Culturing pearls is a process where a bead or small object is purposely inserted rather naturally into the oyster to generate the production of a pearl. Natural pearls are created when an ouster receives a parasite or a small grain of sand and it has been embedded into its tissue. The ouster then encapsulates the sand or parasite with continuous layers of a substance known as ‘nacre which after some time creates a pearl.
Before the 1900s, all pearls were natural. There are now several types of pearls. Listed below are a few of the most common ones.
- Akoya Pearls – cultured in the akoya oyster. This mollusk is farmed primarily in Japan and China
- Freshwater Pearls – freshwater mussels, which live in ponds, lakes and rivers and are produced in China and the United States
- Tahitian Pearls – produced in the black-lipped oysters from Tahiti and the French Polynesian islands.
- Golden South Sea – produced by the Pinctada maxima mollusk from Indian and Pacific Oceans, primarily in Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Myanmar
- White South Sea – one of the rarest of all pearls found in the warm waters of North Australia.
- Cortez Pearls -Rainbow-Lipped Oyster that inhabit the Pacific coast
There are many more type of pearls and they are all extremely beautiful and have there own unique characteristics.
About Mother Of Pearl
Unknown to some, Mother of pearl is not made from pearls. It comes from what “Mother of Pearl” refers to. The mother of a pearl, which in essence is the Oyster or Mollusk. Mother of Pearl is made from the iridescent layer of material which forms the inner shell lining of an ouster and is called nacre. The shell contains Aragonite which is a secretion of the oyster or mollusk and is a natural protein. When expelled, Aragonite forms into crystal plates. The oyster also secretes a silk like compound that bonds these plates into layers somewhat like bricks and mortar of a wall. This creates the luminescent marbleized look of the shell. Pearls also have this compound on the hard outer protective shell of the pearl.
The marbleized rainbow glow of Mother of Pearl is extremely beautiful and is the reason it is so often sought after and admired. These crystals are removed from the shell and inlay-ed into such things as musical instruments, furniture, jewelry and many other products. Combined with silver or gold the effect is dazzling and extremely beautiful. Necklaces, bracelets, earrings and pendants with mother of pearl inlay-ed are irresistibly strikingly stunning.

I have a lot of oysters outside and I want to see if I can use the mother-of-pearl for something. I know it’s possible; I’ve seen pictures of necklaces, silverware, dishes, etc… complete with a short paper on what tools to use for mother-of-pearl. Do you have any other ideas?
By the way, I know this may not be in the right category, but I don’t know where else to ask!!
